El nombre se compone de partes de los nombres de las variedades madre Pinot Noir y Hermitage (Hermitage es un sin\u00f3nimo hist\u00f3rico de Cinsaut en Sud\u00e1frica). La cruz fue realizada en 1924 por el profesor Abraham Isak Perold (1880-1941) en la Universidad de Stellenbosch (Sud\u00e1frica). Las vides, que pasaron desapercibidas durante mucho tiempo, fueron rescatadas del olvido por un tal Charlie Niehaus y pasaron al vivero Charles Theron. Aqu\u00ed se injertaron con \u00e9xito en portainjertos libres de virus en 1935. Sin embargo, no se produjo vino a partir de ellas por primera vez hasta 1941.
